Since 2014, Trans Lifeline has been providing community based support to the LGBTQIA+ community. Envisioning a world where trans people of all ages, ethnicities and fiscal backgrounds can have care, economic security and most of all, connection, Trans Lifeline dedicates themselves to giving anyone under the trans umbrella peer to peer support through their multiple hotline services and microgrants.
Their main hotline – run by trained volunteers under the trans and nonbinary umbrella – provides confidential support to any trans or trans questioning person, whether in crisis or not, in both the US & Canada. For those who want to support their trans loved one, Trans Lifeline also has a Family and Friends hotline that can help educate people on how to provide support to their trans loved one and trans community.
Outside of their hotline services, Trans Lifeline has given relief to the fiscally challenged members of the trans community with their Microgrant programs, covering the fees that come with wanting to update their legal documents (such as state IDs, passports, birth certificates, etc), as well as their ‘Inside Advocacy’ grant that gives mutual aid to trans folks that are or have been incarcerated. Partnering with other organizations, Trans Lifeline also has their Trans Migrant Partnership Program, providing direct services to trans migrants, to which they were able to distribute nearly $41,000 dollars (disbursed in $1000 microgrants respectively) in 2021 alone to support immigration costs, updating names and/or gender markers on said immigration documents, and legal fees during the immigration and asylum processes.
Through multiple, community based channels, Trans Lifeline is striving to bring a safer community to all who fall under the trans umbrella, advocating for those who have been wrongfully disenfranchised or discriminated against for who they are, where they come from, or what they can or can’t do.
